Let's explore the words that describe the people we meet every day.

The 10 Personality Types

In these sessions, we will build a map of 10 key personality types. By learning their roots, you'll learn to think, not just memorize.

The First Root: EGO

EGO
(Latin: "I" or "self")

This root is the starting point for personalities concerned with their own "self".

Egoist

Motivated by self-interest. Every decision is based on the question:
"What's in it for me?"

Egotist

Talks excessively about their own accomplishments and experiences.
"Let me tell you how great I am..."

Egoist vs. Egotist

What's the difference? Look at the extra "T".

Both are selfish, but one is about *deeds* and the other is about *words*.

The adjective form of Egomaniac.

In psychology (popularized by Sigmund Freud), the `Ego` is the part of the mind that mediates between conscious and unconscious.

So, an `Egoist` or `Egocentric` person is one whose `Ego` is overly focused on the desires of the `Id`.

The Second Root: ALTER

This root is the basis for words related to "other" people or "other" choices.

Altruist

Prioritizes the welfare of others over their own, finding happiness in helping.

To skip one and take the other.

An other choice.
"There is no alternative."

Alteration (n.)
(awl-ter-AY-shun)

A change; making something other than it was.
"The tailor made alterations to the suit."

Altercation (n.)
(awl-ter-KAY-shun)

A verbal dispute; a "fight" with the other person.
"They got into an altercation on the street."

Alter Ego (n.)
(awl-ter-EE-go)

Your other self. A trusted friend or a secret identity.
"Batman is Bruce Wayne's alter ego."

The Third Root: VERTO

VERTO
(Latin: "to turn")

This root combines with prefixes to show which way a personality "turns".

A state of misfortune or hardship; when events turn against you.

Avert

From `AB-` (away) + `VERTO` (to turn).
To turn away (e.g., your eyes or a disaster).

Inadvertent
(in-ad-VUR-tent)

From `IN-` (not) + `AD-` (to) + `VERTO` (to turn).
Unintentional; literally, not turning one's mind to it.

Convert
(kon-VURT)

From `CON-` (with) + `VERTO` (to turn).
To turn with; to change from one form or belief to another.

Revert

From `RE-` (back) + `VERTO` (to turn).
To turn back to a former state or habit.

Subvert

From `SUB-` (under) + `VERTO` (to turn).
To turn from beneath; to overthrow or undermine authority.

Controvert

From `CONTRA-` (against) + `VERTO` (to turn).
To turn against; to argue or dispute.

Vertigo

Directly from `VERTO`.
A sensation of whirling or loss of balance; dizziness, as if the world is turning around you.
